Glues and adhesives are essential items in any scrapbooking lover’s kit. Usually a good all-purpose craft glue will be enough, but you may find a combination of several glues and adhesives easier to use for certain elements in your projects and layouts.
When buying your glues and adhesives, check the labels for safety precautions and application instructions. Make sure that the ones that you use on your photographs are acid and lignin free. Here is a list of all the most popular choices of glues and adhesives that you will find in any scrapbooking lovers kit.
Glue Sticks:
Glue sticks are usually clean, white non-toxic, washable and easy to use. They are specially formulated for sticking paper and card, and you can usually lift and reposition until the glue is dry. When using glue sticks, make sure that you take the adhesive right to the edge of your project. Glue sticks are not suitable for use on tissue paper or other thin papers, as they might tear.
All-Purpose Craft Adhesives:
These adhesives are great as they stick a multitude of items from fabric to paper to felt to leather to plastics. Use all-purpose adhesives sparingly and not too close to the edge of the motifs or it may squish out the sides when you press the motif down onto your layout. You can use a tooth pick to apply just the right amount in the right place.
Glue Pens:
Glue pens will put a fine dot of glue just where you want it, and is ideal for sticking small items like small punched shapes or sequins.
Invisible Mounts:
These are a must in any scrapbooking lovers kit. They are small thin squares that are sticky on both sides and are usually acid free, which make them ideal for sticking down your photographs.
PVA Adhesives:
PVA adhesives have great holding power for collages, paper sculpture and pop-ups. You can buy small dispensing bottles to apply directly onto your projects, or you can squeeze some into a saucer and apply it with a brush. PVA adhesives are normally white in colour, but will usually dry clear.
Adhesive Pads:
These are foam pads that are normally available in varying thicknesses. They are great for giving a three dimensional look to your projects as they raise whatever you are sticking down. You can also try using several layers for greater height. They are strong and flexible, so this makes them great for sticking different things together.
Spray Adhesives:
Spray adhesives come in aerosol cans and normally deliver a clear, fast drying spray that evenly covers any surface that you want to stick. You can reposition until it dries, and it won’t leave a sticky deposit once dry. Spray adhesives are ideal for tissue paper and other delicate thin papers. Make sure to follow the safety guidelines on the can.
Double-Sided Tape:
Double-sided tape bonds two surfaces together firmly and is great for holding down the inside panel of booklets or to use on shaker boxes. Double-sided tape works on many different types of materials.
Masking Tape:
Masking tape in scrapbooking is usually used to hold things together while you work and it is easy to remove and won’t leave marks. If you use masking tape to hold things down permanently, make sure that you cover it, as it is not the most attractive looking adhesive.
Micro Dots:
These are tiny glue dots which are ideal for sticking small shapes. They are sold on plastic sheets and are as easily transferred as stickers.
Strong All-Purpose Glue:
This is a versatile and strong adhesive and is suitable for just about any material. You will only need to apply glue on the one surface and press down firmly.
If you are working on a scrapbooking layout, it is important to find acid-free adhesives to preserve your work for generations to come.
